Castello de Almourol : 10 minutes'drive from the house.

Built upon a granitic rock right in the middle of the Tagus River's flow, the 'Castello de Almourol' really deserves a visit, if only for its singular location.

Tomar, Templar  town : 20 minutes.

On the heights of Tomar, one shouldn't miss the 'Convento do Christo', a series of buildings, whose construction was started back in the 12th century by the Templar Order.  Half a fortress, half a monastery, the site unfolds its architectural splendor and originality over a rather large portion of land.  To mention but one, the famous window in splendid manuelin style stands as a clear evidence of the architectural interest of the place.

Coimbra, university town : 1h15 minutes.

Among the oldest universities in Europe, Coimbra still attracts today thousands of students and visitors from all over the world.

Fatima, pilgrim town : 45 minutes.

This famous pilgrim town receives thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.

Serra d'Aire, a national park :  30' drive.

Serra d'Aire is a hilly national park where dinosaur footprints can be seen.  The area also has caves open to visitors.

Paul do Boquilobo, another national park, offers the visitor an area where flora and fauna are protected.

 

These are just a few examples of the numerous places that can be visited from Casa do Patriarca, thanks to its central location in Portugal.

 

On foot

 

For those who prefer walking, numerous footpaths will lead them from the house to a roman fountain, a chapel or even reach the Tagus river which runs nearby.  This is a very lovely area, where the Templar Order settled down centuries ago and which still offers the visitor today many things and places of interest to see.

The  'Mother Church' (Igreja Matriz) is a national monument, built in the 16th century.

One can visit the Chapel of Our Christ of Help (Capela do Nosso Senhor da Ajuda), and a vast old and traditional pottery fabric, where very interesting crafts and goods are to be found.

A liitle further on, in Tancos, one can take a fluvial trip on the Tagus River.
